Chippenham Hospital First to Offer the Hansen Robotic Catheter for Heart ProceduresRichmond, VA, June 17, 2010 Chippenham Hospital recently installed the new Hansen Sensei® X Robotic Catheter System, offering physicians advanced catheter navigation within the heart during electrophysiology (EP) procedures. The new robotic catheter system, referred to as the Hansen Robot, is a sophisticated flexible robotic platform that integrates advanced levels of 3D catheter control with 3D visualization, a combination that provides accuracy and stability to the physician during electrophysiology procedures. This new device allows us to reach critical locations deep inside the heart with greater ease, said Charles Joyner, MD, Virginia Cardiovascular Specialists. Catheter positioning is much more accurate, deliberate and stable with robotic technology than it is when relying on catheter mechanics or the human hand alone. More than 2.5 million Americans have been diagnosed with a complex cardiac arrhythmia resulting in more than 850,000 hospitalizations annually. Prior to the introduction of flexible robotic technology, the majority of electrophysiology procedures were done using a manual technique requiring physicians to perform a series of complex manipulations at one end of the catheter. In addition, because these procedures were performed in the electrophysiology lab, physicians would stand for hours wearing heavy lead vests to limit exposure to X-Rays when monitoring the catheters location in the patient. The Hansen Robot allows physicians to robotically control a catheter from a workstation, improving their technical capabilities during electrophysiology procedures. As a result, physicians have the ability to place catheters deliberately and accurately within the heart. It also reduces radiation exposure to both the patient and physician. In addition, this robotic platform allows physicians to see the location of catheters within the heart in 3D. Previously, two-dimensional technologies, such as fluoroscopy or ultrasound were used to assist physicians with guiding catheters inside the heart, which is a three-dimensional space. The new technology is intended to provide physicians with 3D visualization that is expected to optimize control over placement of the catheter in specific locations.
